Is the smoke alarm in your home beeping or chirping on a regular basis? You shouldn’t ignore it. It could be a sign that it’s not working properly, and in the event of a fire, it might not alert you to it. There are a number of issues that can cause a smoke alarm to beep or chirp regularly. Check out a few of them below.
Your Battery is Loose or Not Installed Correctly
You should test your batteries out and replace them throughout the year. But if you hear beeping or chirping, you should also check the battery to make sure it was placed into your smoke alarm the right way. It needs to be the right type of battery for your specific smoke alarm, and it also needs to be snapped into the alarm all the way so that it makes contact with the battery connections. Otherwise, it won’t provide the power your smoke alarm needs.
Your Smoke Sensing Chamber is Dirty
Over time, dust, dirt, and other debris can work its way into the sensing chamber in your smoke alarm and cause it to beep or chirp. To clean the smoke alarm, you should remove it from its bracket, vacuum it out or use compressed air to blow debris out, and then wipe the outside of it down with a damp cloth. This could clear the beeping or chirping issue up.
Your Smoke Alarm is Installed in a Bad Spot
Humid or steamy conditions can cause a smoke alarm to beep or chirp. So if you have it installed right outside of a bathroom that doesn’t have an exhaust fan or in a part of your home that gets unusually warm during the summer, you might want to consider moving it. Even moving it just a few feet away could prevent environmental conditions from wreaking havoc on your smoke alarm.
Your Smoke Alarm Needs to be Replaced
Smoke alarms are only designed to last for about 10 years. If yours is beeping or chirping, it might just be telling you that it’s time for you to get a new one. It’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes along with having a functioning smoke alarm in your home.
