Commercial fire alarm systems have several parts. What are those parts and why do they matter?
Detention Devices
First, commercial fire alarm systems have detection devices. These are the items that notice when something’s not normal. For example, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are two examples of detection devices. Also, if there’s a manual alarm that a person pulls to signal to others there’s a fire or problem, that’s another example of a detection device.
Notification Devices
Next, there are notification devices which alert people that there’s a problem in the building or on the property. Notification devices can include things like horns, chimes and flashing lights. Modern technology might also allow for notifications to be sent to smartphones alerting people that there’s an issue.
Control Systems
Thirdly, control systems are like the brains of the system. Typically, there’s a panel mounted somewhere in a building that essentially controls the whole system. It receives and sends messages/alerts– and it’s where someone goes when they’re going to inspect or fix the system if something’s of concern.
Backup Power
Finally, there’s backup power, usually by battery, in case the electric fails for whatever reason. For instance, the control panel/system might need to run on battery for a couple hours if a storm knocks out power to the building.
